Family Time

What it is

"Now for something completely different!" is a phrase regularly used to introduce Family Time. It is an opportunity for us as a family to begin thinking together about the theme of the service, whether in small groups or as a whole congregation. Family time is not just a children's slot, it involves everyone from the youngest to the oldest.

Family time activities could be called Olympic in their variety as they include anything from a physical, mental or word challenge. They might involve drama, art, shouting out or running around. Always the aim is to illustrate the theme or key verse which will be explained in the sermon.

Results

How things have changed

Even though Family Time began out of a practical need, it has grown and become something more significant. We have realised that it helps to break the stronghold of 'religion'. It also creates an atmosphere of freedom to worship God and listen to and respond to what He is saying. Family Time enables the spiritual temperature in our services to increase as we break free of any passive religious behaviour and encourage all to be involved through laughing and playing together. It also helps new people to quickly feel welcome and get to know those around them.

Why we do it

Learning together

Family Time began in a time when as a church we were struggling to have enough Sunday School leaders to run children's groups every week. We wanted our services to reflect the all age nature of our congregation and make it more accessible to our younger members. However it soon became a hit with everyone as we saw the benefit of learning together and being family together. Family Time continues to be an important part of Christ Church values as we relax, laugh and learn together.
