Meet the Vicar

Hugh and Helen

Hugh and Helen Balfour

Leaders of Christ Church Peckham

Q. What is God doing in Peckham at the moment?

Hugh: Ordinary Christians are rapidly growing in confidence to minister outside the church, and more and more people are coming alive in the Spirit of God. There is also a growing desire for holiness and we are now much more serious about discipleship.

Q. What is your vision for the church?

Helen: My vision for the church is that it would be a centre for worshiping God and a place where people learn how to walk with God in their daily lives. I try not to think too much about what we should be doing but just to listen to what the Spirit is saying because often His vision is different and we have to keep in step with Him.

Hugh: What God is doing at Christ Church might be summed up as giving us THICK goals for FAT people to get their Ph.D's. Let us explain:

Our goals are:

Terrifying (1 Cor 2:3)

Heartbreaking (Ps 126:5-6)

Impossible (Mark 11:23)

Christ-led (Matt 28:19,20)

Kingdom-building (Matt 10:7,8)

The people we are looking for are:

Faithful

Available

Teachable

The role of every member of the congregation is:

Preaching the good news of the Kingdom

Healing the sick

Driving out demons

Q. What do you like doing in your time off?

Helen: If I have any time off I run in Dulwich Park or watch God.tv.

Hugh: Running and fell running when I can get to the mountains. I also do stuff with the kids and a bit of gardening.

Q. Tell us about your family.

Hugh and Helen: Our children are currently aged 10, 14, 16 and 18, our dog, Suki, is a black Labrador aged 4. Our guinea pigs are called Patches and Charlie Brown.

Q. How long have you been living in Peckham?

Hugh and Helen: We have been living in Peckham 24 years

Q. What led you to Peckham? What keeps you here?

Hugh: Originally, a longing to build a church for local people in the inner city. This has clarified into a call to reach the poor with the love and power of Jesus, and to seek to bring the Kingdom of God to Peckham.

Q. What is the best thing about Peckham?

Helen: Primark!

Hugh: Primark...and the great variety of people from all over the world. There is never a dull moment!

Q. What has been happening in the church over the last fouryears?

Hugh: There has been a move in emphasis from trying to build a church to seeking to bring the values of the Kingdom of God to Peckham. This has resulted in a much greater desire to love the poor and marginalised, a shift in the focus of ministry to healing and deliverance as well as preaching and teaching. and a more active seeking after the presence of God.
